Components and Viewpoints as Integrated Separations of Concerns in System Designing

Separation of concerns is a powerful strategy for managing complexity, providing flexibility and increasing understanding in system design and development. This paper introduces two ways of separation of concerns, namely components and viewpoints. The paper defines a general, implementation-independent component concept through common component aspects and properties, and integrates it into the consistent framework of three architecture models representing different concerns in system design. In this way, traceability from business to implementation, consistency based on the common component concepts and flexibility in system design are provided.
